Basketball was invented in 1891 by a Canadian physical education instructor named James Naismith. Naismith came up with basketball by nailing peach baskets at both ends of a gymnasium and throwing a soccer ball into the baskets to score points.

Inventor Background:

James Naismith was born in Canada in 1861 and later immigrated to the United States. Naismith was not a natural athlete but enjoyed sports and found a passion for physical education.
